Hello Golfers,

Welcome to this weeks newsletter.

Batten down the hatches and get ready for a storm seems to be the word from the Met Office, but let's hope, like many times before, they get it wrong. My annual Pro's Day is tomorrow and the forecast doesn't look too clever but be rest assured we will try everything possible to get this played. The course is in fine condition after the recent rains and is really there for the taking. Hope to see you all over the weekend and make this another fantastic weekend for our wonderful golf club.

Competition news

Bobby Gray Open

There was a fantastic turnout for our final open of the season and we never had one spare slot from 7.30 Am untill 3.30 PM. Well done to Robin Lindsay who on his own looked after the competition and results in the absence of Match Secretary, Bernie Hoey.

Well done to all the prize winners and especially Club Captain, Connor MacLeod who managed to find some form with a fantastic 68 gross for a 64 nett to pip John Pickering on the back 9 for the trophy.

Congratulations also to new Club Champion Callum Connacher who picked up the best scratch award with a gross 70. A poor turnout for the dance however, maybe these things are just old hat now and maybe need to fall on the sword.

Lithgow Trophy

We ended up with a decent entry for the Mixed Open last Sunday as 19 pairs battled it out for the trophy and by the looks of it they all had a good day and enjoyed the after golf also.

Wishaw Junior Championships

Well done to Aaron McGuigan on winning this year's Junior Club Championship. Aaron has also made the jump to the Gent's Section so hopefully you will get the chance to play with him over the next few months. Well done also to Callum Hope who won the handicap Club Championship. Callum has been coming for regular coaching for the last year and his technique is improving each day.

Not forgetting the 8 hole championship. Well done to Reece Mackie who won this event. Reece admits he is more interested in kicking a ball rather than hitting it with a club, but hopefully this win turns his attention more to the golf course as he really does have some talent for this sport.

Many thanks must go to Peter Brown for his efforts with the kids over the last 3 years. What a revelation it has been as there were almost no juniors when I arrived to the club. He has now passed the honour over to Ian Prentice who will now be the new Junior convener, so all the best with that. I would also like to thank Bryce for the junior coaching he conducted over the Summer.

Pro's Day

Well, as I said earlier forecast could be better for weekend but so far we are dodging the rain that was forecast. The Pro Team have arranged a brilliant day for all playing and we now just need the weather Gods to play ball.

Play will be from 7.15AM through to 3.30PM. There are so many prizes to play for but one of the highlights will be the chance to beat me (not with a stick I hear many of you say) but with a shot to the 11th. This will be a no lose gamble in that if you don't beat my shot (which you won't as I am a Pro) that I will hit after your tee shots then you will get that money back in credit in the shop.

The tent will be out for beer and burgers. The play should finish about 7.30pm with the entertainment starting around that time and prizegiving will be around 9.00PM. Check out my fantastic raffle also. I would imagine you should all have at least 1 go in that with the prizes, please check out the prizes below.

Flop shot required

Type ‘flop shot’ into Google and Phil Mickelson’s name will be at the top of the search. The five-time Major champion is the go-to guy when it comes to shots around the green, especially the flop shot. So, if you want to follow suit and impress your golfing partners, here’s our guide to this magical shot.

Technique

The first thing you must do is accelerate through the ball and stay aggressive. It's when we get a little scared or take our eye off the ball that things start to go wrong, all of which we can explain during a short game lesson.

Wedge

Your wedge plays a vital role with worn grooves and incorrect bounce leaving you at risk of a bladed shot through the green. Nightmare!
