Welcome to this week’s newsletter, the first of the New Year and I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. I had a brilliant time but looking forward to getting the New Year underway. Let’s make this another great year for Wishaw Golf Club.

Did you know we recently won an award? We are now in the top 3 courses in North Lanarkshire. A brilliant achievement and well done to everyone involved at the club. This is judged on not only the condition and the quality of the course but the overall golfing experience when playing at Wishaw. So to every member, staff member and committee member stand up and take a bow, you deserve it. Every club I have worked at has had its negative moments over the years but let's take this positive energy and knock 2020 out the park.

Competition results

The In-Between Xmas and New Year Scramble - 2712/19

A good turnout of 17 teams were stripped ready for action in the shotgun start event. It didn’t look too promising at 9.00am but as if by Christmas magic it cleared up perfectly at 10.00am for the start of play. The course was extremely wet and know we have a big kiss for Gerry and his team for allowing us to play as it was certainly 50/50 on whether it should have been playable or not.

As you can see from the scores it was very low scoring, it always is in this format. It was also good to see the winning team had a non-member in the team, after all, it was an invitational event.

So hats off to the team "Delissimo Deli Airdrie" on their great winning score of 54.1. The team was made up of Andy Oliphant, James Cannon, Stuart Crossley and Andy McRobert (Strathaven). They were also keen to inform (remind) that they won this title last year.

Will it be 3 in a row next year?

I will throw in a wee free plug for Andy here also, Andy has opened a lovely little Deli over in Airdrie called Delissimo Deli, if you are over that way pop in as I did the other day, I can recommend the soup and the chicken Tikka panini. Top drawer.

Winter Series - 4/1/20

A pretty good start to the Winter series after the new year with 54 golfers turning up to play. They were greeted with a pretty full course with only 1 winter green in use. Well done to Stevie McCallum and Jim McGowan who won their respective classes. For result click here and for O.O.M table click here.

Over the last few weeks, the sheet has got pretty messy with no shows and people jumping from group to group. Golfers are struggling to get a game booked and there are far too many 2 and 3 balls heading out to play when the sheet appears to be rammed full. Can I just mention the following housekeeping rules, thanks in advance:

1. Please play with who you are signed up in the 4 ball to play with.
2. Please play at the time you signed up in. (if sneaking out before play starts don't book a time)
3. If you can't make it let me know or cancel online.
4. If you sign a player up make sure they know.

Can I just take this chance to thank each and every one of you who used my wee shop over the Christmas period. It really means a lot to me and the club to see so many people shop local. I appreciate it is so easy to click a button now and have it delivered. The old fashioned going shopping days are fast disappearing so I really appreciate your support. My staff and I work very hard for the golf club to make it tick and it's great to get any business we can. A big thanks from all of us in the clobber Cave. Trust me when I say you have a lot of great quality gear starting to land already so here is hoping for a successful year.

THE JANUARY SALE is well underway with some cracking discounts. Help me clear the decks for the new gear and grab yourself a brilliant deal. Its time to clear those accounts also for the start of the new season so be quick before all the sizes and bargains go.

The wait is over and the new range for 2020 has landed in the shop. I must stress this is for demo purposes only but as per usual from the Number one Driver company, they have pushed the boundaries again. It looks awesome.

Pop in for a look and a waggle. You can pre-order just now if you really like it and ensure you are one of the first players to have your hands on it. I am still in the dark ages when it comes to fitting capabilities but let me know if you are keen and I will arrange a fitting for you.

Parky Takes On Men’s Yoga - Every Tuesday

New Year, new me and all that. After a long hard winter, I have decided to try and work on my flexibility and started a Men’s only class at yoga. This is something I have always been keen on trying and I really enjoyed it. The class is run by the fantastic Megan Polland and she is so patient. I urge some of you men to join me on a Tuesday night. Ladies check out the timetable and see if any of the classes suit you. It's only £5 a session.

Yoga is a great way to get your core and balance ready to hit those 300-yard drives. Who is in?

We’re not going to ask anything too strenuous of you this week as we ease our way into the new year so don’t worry! Instead, take a quick look at the image below and see if any of it looks familiar to you.

With a new season upon us and plenty of new products arriving in your local pro shop over the next few months (more on this in the coming weeks), now’s the perfect time to wave goodbye to the old tatty golf shoes, the worn-out gloves in a pile at the bottom of your bag, and the golf balls with more scuff marks than dimples!

If you’re the type of golfer who keeps on top of their equipment then we salute you but if any of the above rings true, pop by the shop this weekend and give your stuff a winter MOT. We’re always here to help.

A bag for life

Following on from our article above, how many things are you trying to jam into your golf bag before every round? For us, a golf bag is so much more than something to lug your clubs around in; instead, it’s an extension of your locker with a place for everything you might need out on the course.

From lucky charms to hand cream, you name it and there’s a good chance a pro has carried it in their bag – well, their caddy to be more precise!
