Welcome to this weeks newsletter. Unprecedented times indeed eh? It's been a fun time at the club this week. Are we open? Are we going to stay open?

Obviously it is impossible for us to judge this but as far as we are concerned at the moment it is business as usual. If any of you would like Boris Johnson or Nicola Sturgeon's telephone number I have them in the shop so give me a shout and I will pass them on to you.

Seriously though none of us here know what is going to happen but take it from us we will be trying to keep the club and course open for you. There are special measures being put in place as you will read later.

Competition results

Winter Series - 14/3/2020

A good turnout of 56 this week, things are getting exciting coming to the close of the series. In first class the winner with an excellent 42 points was Barry Leonard. He beat Gary Leary and Martin Lennox by a measly point. Barry also landed lucky in the magic 2 draw. In second class Mark Poutney ran out the winner by 3 points from Tony Stace and Pat Murray. Mark had 43 points. There was no magic 2s in second class and £19 rolls over to next week.

With the start of the season around the corner, I am going to try a new way of checking in this week to try and prevent the spread of the virus. This may be the way we sign-in come the opening medal.

• Tell Pro to sign you in at Pro Shop.
• Take Card from the table outside the shop.
• No swapping cards, check scores with a playing partner and sign it for them.
• No shaking hands or kisses before or after play.
• Place Scorecards in the box at Pro Shop or take picture of the card and WhatsApp it to the Pro on 07830073160
• The result will be posted on Sunday or Monday when potential Virus has expired.

Corona Virus Update

Wishaw Golf Club needs your cooperation and commitment to ensure that we get through the current situation.

We must ensure that we do everything we can to ensure the safety of everyone whilst keeping open as many of the day to day facilities as possible. However, the safety and wellbeing of staff and all users remains our highest priority.

We, as a committee continue to monitor the national advice regarding the virus and in particular the advice on social interaction that brings groups of people together and we will update everyone as the situation changes. In the meantime the clubhouse remains open but whilst at the club:

• Follow official government advice (see www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus)
• Wash hands regularly and thoroughly for at least 20 seconds each time with soap and water. Hand sanitiser dispensers are now available within the club
• Cover mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing
• Don’t shake hands or have close contact with others within the club
• If you have tested positive for the virus please inform the Secretary

The course also remains open for play but again this will be reviewed as the situation develops and may change. We have taken measures to minimise the risk to yourself and others and as such whilst on the course at this time:

• Please wash hands before and after play and on entry to clubhouse.
• Don’t shake hands on course, I’m sure your playing partner will understand.
• We have inverted the hole cups so as your ball will not drop down to the bottom of the cup thus enabling you to lift your ball out the hole without touching the cup.
• Please do not handle the flagstick nor remove it from the cup.
• All rakes have been removed from the course so please tidy up bunker as well as possible.
• Bins have been removed so please take all rubbish home with you.
• The broken tee caddy’s have been removed.
• Putting green pins and cups have been removed.
• The air guns have been removed and switched off.
• The bells on the course have been removed.

At present we plan to continue with all member competitions but this also may change. We are having continued discussions regarding planned open events and invitational events as well as team matches and will advise you of any decisions reached.

Challenging times lie ahead and we appreciate your help and understanding during this period.

Raymond has asked me to let you all know it is business as usual for him also.

He is offering a takeaway service as well so if you can't get any food from the Supermarkets then give him a shout.

Sociable sessions

Playing golf with your friends is one of the best things about this sport but, if you’re tired of playing long strokeplay rounds in your fourball, why not try some of the fun formats below the next time you find yourself going out in a four?

4BBB

This game is a lot of fun and sees both team members play their own ball, with the lowest score counting at each hole. In a fourball betterball match, players receive 90% of the difference from the player with the lowest handicap.

Greensomes

Both partners tee off on each hole. You then choose the best drive and play alternate shots for the rest of the hole. Your greensomes handicap should be 60% of the lower partner’s handicap added to 40% of the higher partner’s.

Gruesomes

This is a great way to find out who your true friends are as the format is the same as Greensomes only your opposition decide which drive you play from. Although don't blame us if you all end up falling out over it.
