Hello Golfers,

We hope you're well.

Unfortunately, things are not going so well for myself. I made my big return to work last Saturday after COVID had been passed about the family. On Sunday I had to go to the emergency doctor only to learn I have now got the Mumps. So far it has been an awful experience but as I write this newsletter I feel so much better. Fingers crossed I can get back to work soon. A huge thanks to James for stepping in once again, some start to your first season. You will get a day off soon.

Winter series week 2 - Fancy dress fourball

The weather does not stop us

Well, again the weather pretty much scared everyone away. The course stayed open remarkably and in between the horrible heavy showers, the sun shone. We only had 6 teams turn up to play in the Fancy dress fourball which was a big shame as it looked to be really well subscribed. Well done to the 6 teams who played.

Congratulations to John McKenzie, John McCabe, Graham Keatings and Peter Screen who won by 3 strokes, they were also fortunate enough to have the only magic 2 on the day. A cleanup. Well done also to the team of bandits who made an effort to dress up, can you guess who it is? The weather kinda killed the dressing up mojo also. Fingers crossed that this weekends event runs smoothly. We will be playing for the 2019 grand final for all that have qualified. Good luck to everyone playing, even if you have not qualified though (8 appearances last season) you can compete in the sweep on the day. The forecast looks great so fingers crossed they continue to get it right. 

Remember if you have your name down to play on a Saturday and can no longer make it then please remove your name. The system allows you to cancel right up to your tee-off time. If you can't remove your name then get in touch with the Pro shop team and they will do it for you. This also goes for players who don't play in the club Winter series.

Course maintenance

Gerry and his team are well into their Winter programme now. They have had to deal with over an inch of rain so far in November and it's only 4 days in. The course is very very wet due to this. The committee has taken the decision to make mats COMPULSORY throughout the course until further notice. It's not a permanent move and will be reviewed on a regular basis.

One of the most tedious jobs is well underway also, the collection of the leaves. I guess that is the downside of having a beautiful tree-lined golf course.

Augusta looms

Masters week is an exciting time for any avid golfer. It's when we get to watch our favourite golfers battle it out on one of the most iconic courses in the world. Flowers in full bloom, an array of beautiful colours, and a course in pristine condition year-after-year. Augusta National is a special place, so we thought we'd run through some of the standout Masters memories ahead of next week's showdown.


Sunday Shifts

In 1996, Greg Norman turned a six-stroke Sunday lead into a five-stroke loss to Nick Faldo. In 1978, Gary Player started the final round eight strokes behind before shooting the lowest-ever final round (64) at Augusta to claim the Green Jacket!


Fighting Spirit

Tiger’s incredible 2019 comeback win springs to mind, but Ben Hogan recovered from a terrible car crash in 1949 to win The Masters by five strokes in 1953. Ben Crenshaw’s 1995 victory came in the same week as the funeral of long-time instructor Harvey Penick. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
